Background:

Since its establishment in 2011, the BIH Charité Clinician Scientist Program (CSP) provides a unique opportunity for young medical doctors to combine their clinical training with “protected time” for research. This structured career path fosters translation of scientific discoveries into application and strengthens the innovative capacity of academic medicine.

However, as academic medicine undergoes unprecedented technological transformation, aspiring clinician scientists are not sufficiently prepared for the technological challenges associated with advanced computational science approaches incl. big data management, bioinformatics, quantitative image analysis and artificial intelligence – all indispensable methodologies for future data driven medicine.

To cope with this, an additional structure for a novel “digital science” driven career track has recently been introduced: The new Digital Clinician Scientist Program (D-CSP) aims to strengthen the already existing program and bring it to the “next level” by incorporating the new structural element of digital science. A strong collective of potential mentors from partner institutions and Berlin universities will bring new competencies at the interface with computational sciences. The scope of technologies and computational science approaches includes data science, bioinformatics, computational simulation, AI, quantitative macro- and microscopic imaging, virtual and mixed reality, and robotics.

In order to develop an educational and research interface between clinical goals and the above listed technologies, D-CSP has teamed up with experts and institutes from Berlin universities, overarching institutions, and networks and will use these new partnerships to provide access to broad computational science expertise and enable interdisciplinary research models that are more flexible, supportive and adaptable to challenges of digital transformation. Among the partner organisations are Technische Universität, Humboldt Universität, Freie Universität, Berlin Institute of Health, Einstein Center for Digital Future, Bernstein Center for Computational Neurosciences, Berlin Big Data Center, Cluster of Excellence „Image, Knowledge, Gestaltung“.

Event’s Objective:

Given the D-CSP declared goals, the “Smart Health & Biomedical Innovation” event aims at creating an initial opportunity for medical doctors, researchers and computer science experts to meet and exchange ideas on possible collaboration and common research projects. Ideally, the event will serve as an occasion for match-making, resulting in the establishment of long term interdisciplinary research teams of clinician and computer scientists.

Potential applicants for (junior) D-CSP positions are asked to provide a short abstract of their project idea and to pitch it during the Match Making Event. If you are interested in pitching your project idea, please fill out this form and send it to iwan.meij@bihealth.de.
Abstracts are circulated in advance to enable targeted matching with digital experts. All registered participants will receive a link and passwort to submitted project abstracts via email.
