Smart Data Forum meets the e-Estonia showroom

The Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union organized the Ministerial e-Government Conference to discuss how to boost e-governance development and cooperation in Europe in October 2017. The Smart Data Forum team and a representative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) used the opportunity to visit Tallinn, Estonia on 5-6 October to explore the possibilities of collaboration with the e-Estonia Showroom in the context of e-Government Conference.

The visit started off with a tour to the e-Estonia showroom entailing an overview of e-Estonia. The showroom a council, comprised of ten public and private sector representatives and chaired by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications. The e-Estonia showroom is used to demonstrate e-government solutions, as a set-up enterprise area, as technical playground, to highlight remote area solutions as well as to demonstrate the advantages of IT in school environment and ICT in home environment.

There were also a series of intense meetings with Estonia’s digital agenda experts: Siim Sikkut the Government Chief Information Officer of Estonia, Janek Rozov the head of department of Information Society Services Development and Marten Kaevats the national digital advisor in the Government Office of Estonia. Estonia’s interest to work on e-health as their next big national agenda indicates opportunities for the two sides to collaborate, given Germany’s experience in digital health research and development and also security and legal issues regarding e-health.

On 6 October, the SDF team and the representative of the BMWi participated in the e-Government Conference. During the conference different aspects of e-government were covered, such as E-services created under this initiative include i-Voting, e-Tax Board, e-Business, e-Banking, e-Ticket, e-School, University via internet, the e-Governance Academy, as well as the release of several mobile applications.
